I have a few cold skillers.  Unfortunately, even a slvl 40 Frozen Orb
(FO) is only about 600 dmg.  Blizzard is more powerful but sort of hit
and miss.  Glacial Spike (GS) is powerful and non-timered but a pain to
aim.  What is the ultimate cold sorc setup?

Not sure why but IMHO FO damage is much higher than that. It kills much
faster anyhow, no matter what the thing says. I have been through hell with
a level 20 FO on a chanter.

AFAIK, the damage displayed for FO is the damage each shard from the
Frozen Orb does. Don't forget the last 'blast' from the Orb dissolving.
And also don't discount the effect Cold Mastery has on the final damage.

FO is a pretty amazing skill for just 20+1 Skill Point if you only use 1
point in CM. Hell, I even keep a staff with +FO/+CM for taking out those
nasty PI+LI monsters you occasionally encounter with my pure Li sorc.

As for the 'ultimate' Cold Sorc, that would perhaps be a fully synergized
Blizzard Sorc, though she be sort of a one-trick pony, and in big trouble
once she hits something that's both CI as well as PI (assuming she has a
pretty kick-a.s merc). Also keep in mind Infinity isn't as good at break
Cold Immunes as it is at breaking Lightning Immunes.

Regards,

Patrick.

Yep, the damage listed is per shard. With each monster getting hit by
multiple shards, plus the blast itself, orb does a LOT more than 600 damage
per cast.

Aye., most cold immunes can't be broken even by a paladin's level 25
conviction(I have 2 auradins, so I've had a lot of experience learning what
can and can't be broken), much less Infinity's lvl 12.

I knew someone who had a (pure) blizz sorc equiped with a near-perfect
Death's fathom, a similar Nightwing's Veil and a Snowclash as well as lots
of skillers. (This was pre-torches). Man, when questing or playing with her
I didn't get to touch anything that wasn't cold immune, they just
disappeared instantly.

General purpose and MF, Blizzard. It has the problem you quoted,
but usually only affect stationary objects/monsters. Everything
that moves under the shower get hit pretty badly. When dealing
with couch potatoes that doesn't like moving, use teleport
strategically. I believe it's also the one with most damage
output. If you can get slvl 40 Blizz, Hell Mephie should only be
only 2-3 casts after static.

FO has a seemingly much higher damage output than what's on
paper. Try a slvl 20 FO with slvl 1 CM in hell. In theory you
aren't going to kill anything, but instead it does a decent job.
Some people say the listed damage is per shard/bolt but I
haven't read any in depth technical analysis yet. Very few
people, if any at all, use FO for sole cold sorc because it
practically doesn't benefit from synergies.

Some specialized builds also will use other skills like Ice Bolt
or Blast, either for the freeze/chill duration, missile speed,
or whatever reasons that I have little knowledge about.

Ultimate cold sorc set up is generally all about +skill, +cold
damage, and -Enemy cold resist. Ugliest sorc helm Nightwing,
Death's Fathom, the right Ormu's robe, cold facet, etc. They are
all gawdly expensive for the average income households.

Although these days with everyone clamouring after the high-end
ladder-only runewords, uniques in general are a lot more cheaply
available than they were pre-1.10. <g>
