I am about to start a New Necro based on the summoning tree in PvM SP.
How important is blocking to this build? There does seem to be
conflicting advice on this, and the build suggestion I'm thinking of
using is for blocking up to 75% chance to block.
But this build is not a melee fighter is he, so can I get away with
minimum blocking?

Summoning necros shouldn't be meleeing, really, if they can help it.
And later on they rarely do, what with their golem and 8+ skeletons
slaughtering everything.

Mine always have gotten away with base points in Dex. Also, your options
for making a maxed Block Necro are rather limited.
The only nice shield is Homunculus, but even there you need to invest
quite a bit in Dex, which you _could_ have invested in Vit. I prefer a
larger all-round 'life' buffer over a 'blocking' buffer (which doesn't
work against, for instance, magical attacks).
Anyway, didn't you build a Summoning Necro before, since I seem to recall
some questions from you about such a build quite a while back...?
Regards,
Patrick.

Yes I did. But unfortunately, my grand-daughter deleted the character I
had built when trying to get to grips with Diablo2/LoD.
So it's now starting over again.

I'm one of the near extinct blocking necros in this NG. My
advice is FORGET about block for a summoning necro UNLESS:
a) You have a high block shield, like Homunculus (as Patrick
suggested), or Trang's Wing, or SS, etc; and
b) You play HC or you duel; and
c) You have attained the 900-1000 life milestone so you can live
through one uber blow to your head if you miss the block.

Your skels block for you, so stay at base dex. Dim Vision, Terror
and/or Attract mean you should not have any occasion to block.

Don't forget Decrepify. If the monsters get through your minions Decrep
gives you that bit of a chance to move away and get more minions or use
AD/CE. ;-)
