Barbarian. I like to be next to them when I kill them, so I can eat them while they're still fresh.
Skills are sword, mace, and axe. I haven't put anything into range weapons, because I like to wear the shield.

Jump right in and take out Summoner so he is not shooting those cold orb thingies. Perhaps try some throwing weapon, so you can still use a shield - at least on switch.

I hadn't thought of using thrown axes. Sounds like I need to get all the cold resistance I can as well. Thanks.

I make a run at the platform with my paladin, dodging his minions and zig zagging in a random pattern so the summoner can't "put a bead" on me. That's the most important part,to keep moving and zig zagging,so his mega-strong missile fire can't hit you before reaching him.
If there's too many minions, just dart out, grab their attention, then lead them away so you can safely kill them a few at a time. Then just dodge the rest until you finish off the summoner. He seems to hat few hit points, making him easy to kill if you can get close enough to hit him.
But if thrown axes or maybe knives would work, heck I'd give that a shot first. Can't barbs throw two weapons at once?

The best general advice is just to have some patience, take the crowd on one at a time, retreat if things get sticky, and keep wearing away at them.
And if you think the Summoner is hard to beat, you haven't tried soloing Duriel.

That depends on your character. If you are an Amazon for example, you can just spam the platform with Guided Arrow until all the bad guys are dead. A Sorceress might want to cast a bunch of Firewalls on the platform. A summoning Druid can cast his animals and a Necromancer can cast a Golem on the platform. Paladins and Barbarians will probably have to either lure The Summoner's demons away from the platform and kill them one by one before going after The Summoner who usually goes down quite easily. -- "Fate is like a caged gorilla. Barbarians have the least problems with the Summoner of any class, unless they've been rushing and are below level 18 by that point and therefore haven't gotten Leap Attack yet (a standard part of any cookie-cutter build, probably mainly becuause of the Summoner :).
Paladins, on the other hand, don't seem to have any option other than to fight their way through the hordes, at least in Normal when they're not likely to have Fist of the Heavens by the time they reach the Summoner (unless he's undead?)

IIRC, the Summomer starts shooting at you from very far away, so my usual advice of using one of the best skills in the game - Taunt - might not help you here if you are taking mucho damage from the Summoner's spells. Nevertheless, you might try that at least on some of the Ghosts. Taunt one, then run out of range of the spells, while the Ghost flies over from the platform to you.
The Summoner's spells hurt, but he has relatively little health. The best thing to do is just charge him. To avoid the monsters with him, just keep spamming Howl the minute you see the Summoner's platform.

One way to fight him is to coax your nervous nellie of a mercenary into range to fight. This involves running into harm's way and sort of dancing around until the dumb merc figures out where he should go. Then once he or she is engaged you can step back
Trouble with the Summoner is, he can kill you when you still can't even see him.
Last time I fought him, in Nightmare with my Paladin Manfred, I just ran right into the midst of the bad guys. To my surprise, they couldn't kill me quickly, so I got the Summoner, who is easy to kill once you can see him and hit him.
It helps to have lots of life points and a good strong defense, so that you don't die from the first thing he throws at you.

I told you I was a newbie. I haven't even learned the jargon yet. The new character I started just arrived in loot goldmine and is busy cleaning out the sewers. This time I concentrated the skills on sword and double throw/double swing. Brought my merc with me, making sure she's got good armor and a good bow. Paid to have her ressurected after andariel knocked us both flat. Went after her naked except for throwing knives in each hand to get my armor back. Run, run, throw, chug-a-lug grab armor and repeat until sparks fly out of her fanny. Fun!

Run, run, throw, chug-a-lug > grab armor and repeat until sparks fly out of > her fanny. Fun! I love throwing knives for almost every char type. For act one at least anyway. A decent set or two with a couple/three damage charms should be able to take most char types thru most of act two even. Replenish quantity and cold damage are my personal two favorite mods. Besides the 'main' advantage of replen quan, a major (for a new char) second advantage is that it costs one gold to repair/replenish no matter how few are left. The cold damage is so that those pesky Fallen become puddles that their Shamans can not revive.
