Baal (Normal) just went down for my Paladin (Zeal/Fanaticism).  Didn't
even need to heal once - nor did I have to heal my Rogue.  On the other
hand, Lister the Tormentor and his horde killed my Rogue and made me use
up 5 Full Rejuvinations. :P

And now the Nightmare begins...

Not at all unusual for many builds to have more trouble with Lister
than Baal.  For one thing, Lister has a heck of a heal rate.

Someday, maybe.  Think I might take a break and install the far-harder
original Diablo again for a while to see if I can make it past The
Butcher (dozens of tries, only ever succeeded once - a Rogue who got
*VERY* lucky and found a long room with jail walls). :]

*sigh* Seems D1 hates Win2k, even with compatability mode on (tried
setting to Win95 and then Win98, no change) - just goes to, and stays
at, a black screen after choosing multiplayer or single player. The 1.09
patch, of course, just hangs when I run it, but not before destroying
the installation (by making it no longer recognize my disc).

Ah, well, guess I'll have to pass on being butchered, as usual, by the
Butcher. :)

Just run him around the stairs down to 3, counter-clockwise.  He will
eventually get stuck in the stairwell.  It takes a bit of practice to
do this consistently without getting nailed, especially if the stairs
are very close to a wall.  Then just stand opposite him and kill him
with a bow (if playing rogue or warrior -- a warrior should use a long
or hunter's bow) or a firewall and Firebolt if playing a sorc.

ISTR mentions of that problem in AGD, but I forget what the solution
was.

Pity.  The old game still rocks after all these years.  I have it on
my HD, and still try an ironman once in a while.

Remember to check your resistances. :\

I really like children, but don't think I could eat a whole one.

I have a Charge-adin and I had more trouble with The Ancients than
with any either Baal or his minions. I had to chug six full
rejuvenation potions (I probably jumped the gun on one or two of them
but hey, that's what they're for) before taking them down. They also
killed my Rogue -- although she took one of them with her and it was
easier to finish off the remaining two. Lister and his horde took also
killed my Rogue but I didn't have to take any potions.

Baal was somewhat of a challenge. He did kill my Rogue and forced me
to take about six healing potions and a mana potion. His hoarfrost was
a pain to deal with and his inferno type attack appears to also drain
a lot of mana. But in the end, he was nowhere near as tough as the
Ancients.

My fight with Diablo went much the same way. My Charge-adin died twice
courtesy of his Doom and Oblivion Knights -- they'd Iron Maiden me in
mid-charge and I'd kill myself. Both times I managed to take out the
hoard by distracting them with Blessed Hammer and letting my Rogue
kill them. She really shined in that fight. Once Diablo came out of
his lair, it was mostly a matter of running around and whittling away
at him with Charge -- my Rogue did not shine in this fight.

I think a lot of it has to do with my character. My Charge-adin has to
run around in order to attack so the bad guys have time to attack him.
This usually doesn't matter since most monsters get taken out in one
or two hits. But the big bosses and their minions are tougher than
that so they can do more damage.

Ouch. The Ancients (at /players 1, of course) were not even the
slightest challenge for my Zealous Fanatic - didn't need to heal and my
Rogue was maybe down by 1/10th of her health.

Strangely enough, I don't think I've ever been Iron Maidened by 'em, at
least in Normal.  It's always the Venom Lords that give me trouble, even
with 75 Fire resistance - this Paladin went through 8 or 9 full rejuvs
and still died 3 times from them. :/

Never noticed how my Rogue did in the fight against Diablo. My Paladin
just stood toe-to-toe with him. I needed to full rejuv once - I had
sneezed and my hand jerked the mouse while I was holding down the
button, causing me to stop Zealing and move... :/
