I notice there's little mention of these (crafted items) here. I assume
this is because uniques and runewords are superior, or am I wrong (since
I'm wondering if it's worth trying to make some Blood/Safety items to
help my paladin through hell)

Unfortunately crafted items were toned down in 1.09 and have since been
almost entirely superseded by runewords. You can still make some nice
jewelry though, if you're willing to use up a *lot* of gems and runes ;)

Also belts and gloves.

As Mickey already mentioned you can craft some nice Gloves and Belts, but
not with all recipes... Also, in my opinion, there are a few more worthy
candidates. First, the link which is the entrance to all recipes for those
who are wondering what we're talking about:

http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/crafteditems.shtml

With regard to gloves, Hit Power Gloves are nice if you need Knockback
somewhere (usually only usefull on Strafing Amazons). Very popular are
Blood Gloves, due to the 5-10% Crushing Blow and Life Leech which always
spawns on them. The other gloves are less popular.

Belts then, a Blood Belt is nice due to the extra life, Life Leech and
Open Wounds. You can also craft a pretty nice Caster Belt, although none
will really overshadow Arachnid Mesh.

Other items of note to craft:

Hit Power/Blood weaponry: if it spawns with the Cruel and Master's
prefixes, together with the 35-60%ED of the recipe, you can end up with a
weapon which does 300+150+60 = 510% Enhanced Damage. Still, you need a
boatload of luck, and even then, it will be outperformed by an ethereal
Runeworded weapon. If you really like gambling, you could use an ethereal
input weapon, and hope for the auto-repair mod + Cruel + Master's. ;)

Boots: Blood Boots can have some pretty nice life and have Life Leech.
Caster Boots can turn out interesting: if you craft one with good mods,
FRW, FHR and some resists, you have some godly boots.

Caster Amulets are very popular, if you craft something with 10%FCR +
10FCR affix, +2 caster skills and some res/life/mana, you'll have
something godly again.

For other ideas, browse around a bit at the link I provided to get an idea
what to expect. The outcome of some of these recipes are outright useless
though, however good the mods...

Regards,

Patrick.

The last freezealot that I built wore a set of blood vampirebone
gloves pretty much all the way through Hell.  They had 10% CB, 3% LL,
and +18 or 19 life, plus a little bit of resistances, magic find, and
I think they had some IAS also.  I never found anything better, so he
wore them until the end.

My last Sorc wore a crafted caster belt from Act IV nightmare through
the middle of Hell.

For any sorc I build I burn through a ton of pamethysts and Ral runes
making caster amulets.  I've gotten some pretty nice ones, and some
pretty crappy ones.

I also built a throwbarb a while back that wielded dual crafted blood
axes for a long time.  I had quite a bit of crafting luck with that
character - I seemed to get a lot of +skills on the axes.  I think he
also wore a crafted blood belt for awhile until he found a SOE.

Bottom line - if you have the gems, runes and jewels to craft with, it
can be worth your while.  You'll get some real crap, but you'll also
get some damned fine items.

Here's the thing: the best post-1.09 rune words kick almost all other
items to Hell and gone, but _there_are_no_sockets_ in belts, gloves
and boots.  And jewelry, of course.  So lots of people do craft belts,
gloves and boots, and occasionally get really nice stuff.  What better
use for all the useless blue elites and low runes you find?
