when chatting in game the player i'm talking to complains he can hear
himself repeated as an echo. anyone else had this or is it a problem with my
setup?
sound on my machine is Realtek using the ALC 885 chipset, latest drivers
installed.

If he hears _himself_ repeated as an echo when he talks, then it's his
problem, not yours.

Tell him to quit using his speakers and buy a headset.

Does the same thing happen to everyone you talk to or just one person?
It sounds like a feedback from speakers to microphone. Try to move your
mike as far away from the speakers as possible or buy a headset.

Thanks for the replies but I use a decent quality headset and have no
speakers attached the machine. The problem has appeared after I reinstalled
BF2. Something may have 'slipped' somewhere because if I switch EAX on in
audio options I just get massive amount of loud, and I mean LOUD
interference.
It used to run just fine and I wondered if anyone else has had a similar
problem. Maybe I'll reinstall again and see what happens.

You missed the whole point. It's not on YOUR machine it's on HIS
the problem exists. HE needs to use a headset.
