How the hell do you kill the Regenerators?

I killed one already,not sure how though. I have the semi-auto rifle with
the infared scope and even after I kill all the plagas (the red spots) they
still keep killing me. I'm at the room with two of them,near the research
area and they just won't die. Please help.

Keep firing at the upper body after you shoot all the red spots.  Should die
eventually.

If there are spikes that come out of them, then they aren't
Regenerators, but Iron Maidens.  Iron Maidens are like regenerators, but
you have to keep shooting them even after all the palagas are destroyed.
 And, being all sneaky like, some of them have palagas on their backs,
so you need to shoot off one of their legs to see it.
