does anybody else here think that the look of the new zelda is a sign
that nintendo are finally listening to their critics and starting to try
and appeal to an older audience?

or is it because this look works best for them in the ocarina of time,
and in fact they aint learned at all?

It might just be because, as I recall, Wind Waker had a definitive ending,
and they're just going back to the /other/ universe now :D

I meant a definitive ending in which things happened like...

S
T
A
N
D
A
R
D

S
P
A
C
E

Hyrule being disbanded, or whatever?

i thought wind waker was part of the main zelda universe?

isnt the timeline something like:

ocarina
[random offshoot that is majora's mask]
wind waker (which then changes the landscape)
a link to the past
(long period of time)
legend of zelda
adventures of link

the only alternate zelda universe i can think of is the games on the
gameboy and gameboy color.... or am i totally missing something?

The way I remember it is that it went like this

Ocarina
(Wind Waker Offshoot)
Majora, Link to the Past (Seasons/Ages/Awakening), Legend of Zelda,
Adventure of Link.

But I might be wrong. I'm pretty sure this is how it went, tho.

you could be right, but who can say for sure?

heh - only shigeru could tell us the way it actually happened - and i
think he would probably admit that continuity between the games is
tenuous at best!

An "older audience" probably means gamers who played during the NES
and SNES console generations.

If this is so, then the cartoony style should appeal more to them.

I'm 28 and Wind Waker makes me nostalgic about the old Zeldas,
especially Zelda III.

lets face it, those who played the NES and SNES who now continue to play
video games are the main reason nintendo still sells consoles - they
have established themselves in many peoples mind, including my own, as
creators and producers of quality games with a universal appeal...

however, it is relying on this core audience is also the reason why
nintendo is falling behind and no longer the video games giant it used
to be - if nintendo are to survive against the financially stronger sony
or microsoft they need to expand their audience rather than continuing
to cater for the slowly dwindling number of people who loved their NES
nearly 20 years ago...

by "older audience" i did not mean gamers who played during the 8 and
16-bit eras, instead i was referring to the huge market of casual gamers
who sit in the 16-25ish age group who may or may not have played on
nintendo's systems when they were younger but refuse to buy any more
nintendo products because they are not "cool" enough - for the casual
gamer console ownership is all about impressing your friends, and GTA3
will impress alot more casual gamers than wind waker ever will...

personally i would never want to see the day that nintendo's cartoony
games are a thing of the past but unless nintendo sort out their act and
start appealing to the testosterone fueled casual gamers (who vastly
outnumbers the core audience of nintendo loyalists) then nintendo's
cartoony games *will* be a thing of the past...

wind waker is an excellent game, and i love the cel shaded style,
possibly the best example i have ever seen of cel shaded graphics and
what is more they feel like part of the game rather than a gimmicky
graphical style..... but even i cannot ignore the fact that the cartoony
look of wind waker has damaged the sales of what is currently nintendo's
strongest franchise - despite the sales being very good, wind waker
should have been *the* game to sell millions of cubes...

Well, it sold me a Cube...and Animal Crossing sold me a 2nd Cube.

I wanted an N64 when they came out (would have been my 1st console) but they
were sold out everywhere I looked to the point where I got frustrated with
Nintendo and waited until Xbox came out which I grabbed at release. I was
happy with just the Xbox until Zelda WW came out... then I just had to have
a Cube.
