Can't use cheat codes for Spawn: Armageddon

My son has Spawn: Armageddon for the Gamecube. He bought a book at his grade
school book fair entitled **Secret Codes 2004**, but he can't get the cheats
for SA to work.

We follow the directions scrupulously, first pausing the game as instructed
and then entering the 8 direction-key combinations unique to whatever cheat
we want to try. We've tried holding down the pause button while pressing the
direction keys, but that doesn't work, either.

Any idea what we're doing wrong? Obviously, the book omitted some other
key(s) that we need to press.

If it helps, here's GameFAQs' codes page:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/gamecube/code/36578.html

It's possible that you have to enter the codes a little more quickly.

Darn it anyhow, Mike. That was a good idea, but unfortunately it didn't do
the trick, either.  :-( In fact, we tried all sorts of speeds!  The cheat
codes on the FAQ link that you posted matched the ones in my son's book, but
there *must* be something missing... either on our end or that the people
who came up with the cheats forgot to mention.

Hmmm...I don't have any idea what do now.  The fact that I haven't played
the game and I never cheat doesn't help :-(

Fortunately, GameFAQs also has a Spawn: Armageddon message board.  There are
just three threads, but someone else also had this problem.

http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=36578&topic=15774769

It says to press Start to pause, immediately enter the code as quickly as
you can, then unpause right after you hit the last button.  If it's done
right, you should hear Spawn say something.  Not sure whether it really has
to be quite that fast, but you never know.

Good luck!

Well, guess what, Mike? You've managed to solve the problem for us!  Nowhere
in his book did it say anything about "unpausing" it immediately after
pressing the eight directon keys! As soon as we tried START(pause) Key1 Key2
Key3 Key4 Key5 Key6 Key7 Key8 START(unpause) in fairly rapid succession,
Spawn said something and we knew that it had worked.  So, many thanks for
your help!  :-)
