It looks like Miyamoto and the programming team working on Mario 128,
the next major Super Mario Bros game, are experimenting with their
ideas, testing it out on Gamecube as well as the still in-development
next generation Nintendo console.  but it sounds to me like they'll
*probably* hold the new Mario game over for the next console.

GameSpy: What is going on with Mario 128?
Miyamoto: It's moving along secretly like a submarine under the water.
When developing, we often look at the different hardware and run
different experiments on it and try out different ideas. There have
been a number of different experiment ideas that we have been running
on the GameCube. There are some that we have run on DS, and there are
other ideas, too.

At this point I just don't know if we will see that game on one system
or another. It is still hard for me to make that decision. I am the
only director on that game right now. I have the programmers making
different experiments, and when I see the results, we will make the
final decision.

is that the impression you get from reading the above, that Nintendo
will hold the next Mario over to the next console, or do you feel
it'll still be made for Gamecube?

I've been saying for ages they would do this. Certain contributors to this
group assured me it was confirmed for Gamecube, but I give them a link to an
interview with a Nintendo big cheese who virtually said it was gonna come
with the next console. It certainly makes business sense for the big 'N' to
release a Mario title with the next machine, but it's also good business
sense to support your current hardware with your best games. I would
certainly like to play this game on Gamecube, I know that much.

I think it best all round if this comes out on N5 provided we get Zelda on
Gamecube

I don't blame them if they do that, not having a Mario launch title on GC
really "hurt" it IMO.  SM64 was an awesome launch title and pretty much
kicked off the N64 in style.

Now, if they can make Mario 128 (or will it now be 256? 512?) a launch title
for N5, and it is revolutionary, then Nintendo will have a great hand going
into the next generation, we have enough on the GC for now, I feel a Mario
128 may not get the attention it deserves if it comes out on the GC.
