Theories on Nintendo and their recent announcements

After hearing the recent comments from Yamauchi (former president of
Nintendo) and Iwata (current president) about how we (meaning their
customers) don't want cutting-edge technology, how we should love the DS or
the industry (and Nintendo) is doomed, and about their great peripherals are
going to revitalize the Gamecube, I was extremely confused.

Here are my theories about why they would say such stupid things, which came
out of my tortured mind after a couple of days now of wondering what the
heck could possibly explain Nintendo's attitude, which seems to be exactly
the opposite of their biggest supporters
(like me).

Theory A: Some kind of tailored brain-infecting virus, possibly release into
Nintendo's HQ by Microsoft or Sony.

Theory B: The trolls were right all along: Nintendo is KIDDIE.  Not only
that, but they hate us.  And by "us", I mean lifelong Nintendo fans.  I
think Nintendo is sick of us, and they want us all to go away so they can
only sell to kids.  Kids don't criticize their stupid decisions.  Kids don't
laugh at the E-Reader.  Kids like Pokemon.  Kids like Powerpuff Link.  Kids
like the Mario Sunshine Teletubby commercials.  Kids don't care about tech
specs.  I think Nintendo wants you as their customer until you turn 10.
Then get the hell out.

As for me, I think my plan is to stick it out.  I'll keep buying whatever is
good from them, and wait for Yamauchi to die and/or Iwata to quit.  Miyamoto
and the rest of Nintendo's extremely talented, non-decision-making staff
will still be there.  Maybe they'll be allowed to make great games again, as
they see fit, like they were in the NES/SNES days.  I've already suffered
through the E-Reader, the GBA/GC link, and Link's

Didn't Iwata just take over the job? And I believe when he was brought in,
people said he was in tune with the current generation of gamers.

Don't forget who it was who hired him.  Iwata has been moving Nintendo in a
different direction, but he's doing it without rocking Yamauchi's boat too
hard.  I think that Yamauchi still has more influence than people might
realize.

Well of course he does. Wouldn't you live in fear of the undead? :)

who said that a former pres. from nintendo said that nintendo is doomed and
that valued customers dont want new stuff?  nintendo didnt say anything
stupid because they didnt say that.  it is especially confusing when u say
that nintendo hate the main age group that they sell to.  thats just stupid
to think that, why would they?  u basically disproved what u said; there are
a whole lot of life long nintendo fans, and, im pretty sure (but please,
correct me if im wrong, seriously!) that companies like their customers to
be plentiful so they can make money.  so please, tell me and everyone else,
why u think a company, not just nintendo, would actually try to get rid of
their cutomers?  this is your opinion, and fortunately, not mine.

instead of trying to prove your point by immaturely making fun of nintendo
because u think its more directed towards the younger age group, maybe u
should figure out a way to back up ur facts/opinions.  well, this is just my
opinion, not yours.

Here, see for yourself the facts that you think I should have provided.
Here they are at IGN, but these stories are widely available on gaming news
sites:

This is one of the stories with quotes from Mr. Yamauchi, former president
of Nintendo:

Here's the story with quotes from Mr. Iwata.
http://cube.ign.com/articles/492/492280p1.html

There are more examples of them making extremely odd or alarming statements
that show how out-of-touch they are with gamers, such as their firm opinion
that gamers are excited about Game Boy Advance-Gamecube link functions, but
you can find them yourself.

And to answer your question, I have no idea why Nintendo or any company
would try to alienate their customers, but that definitely IS what they are
doing now.  Take a look at the kind of feedback they are getting from these
ridiculous comments:

By the way, please don't call me immature.  I'm 30 years old, and have been
a huge Nintendo fan since Donkey Kong, their first videogame.  I'm not
making fun of Nintendo, I'm criticizing them, and it's completely justified.
And please, PLEASE learn to use periods, commas, and capital letters.

You're right that these comments are completely out-of-touch, at least
in the context they are presented. Here's an idea, though - when
whoever said "cutting-edge technology isn't the answer", did he really
mean Nintendo is not interested in that aspect of making games? Maybe
he just meant that developing better hardware ALONE won't advance
gaming, and that new ideas are needed in addition to making the
hardware crank more polygons.

Then again, it is Nintendo we're talking about. It will be a sad day
if I decide not to purchase N's next machine, so here's hoping.

Yes, I wonder about the context too, but even if the comments are dead-on,
it wouldn't be impossible that they would say something that stupid and then
develop a kick-a.s machine anyway (as is the case with Gamecube).
But no matter how you slice it or what their next console ends up being
like, comments like these hurt their image, and their image is tarnished
enough by misperception without completely insane, anti-gamer statements
from Nintendo's leadership.

Just treat the anouncements as rumors that got bent and twisted too
much.
