who thought the new GBA R-type was going to be a new version? Its just a re
hash of the super nintendo version. What a dissapointment! I hoped it would
be Rtype final converted to the GBA or is Rtype final just a rehash of Rtype
III? WTF is the deal?

Somehow I don't think that RType Final would translate well to the tiny
screen and relative weak horsepower of the GBA. Besides, a lot of GBA games
are just remakes of SNES or Super Famicom games.

If the programmers worked hard on it it could be possible (seeing as the GBA is
more powerful than the SNES), but why bother when you can just lazily port over
the SNES game, ruin the graphics by over-adjusting the contrast to suit non-lit
GBA's and cut back on audio quality? Oh, and slap a ?40 price tag on it?

Apparently, the GBA can display 512 colours on-screen, yet I have never seen a
game do this. Even Sonic Advance 1&2 rarely goes over 128! Yes I was sad enough
to take a snapshot from an emulator, load it into PSP and have it count the
colours...

Strangely enough, before I read this, I was thinking that the GBA lacks a
version of R-Type. In true Nintendo fashion it seems, they (well, the
programmers anyway) have opted to port over a SNES game yet again, which means
NO 512-colour graphics, and a cut-down rendition of the in-game music (due to
the GBA having fewer audio channels). Come to think of it, I have yet to see a
GBA game that HAS 512-colour graphics, even though the thing supports it by
default. Do you have a link to a preview? I have a nasty feeling that the
graphics may be brightened up (in Donkey Kong Country fashion) making them look
horrendous on an SP.

I had only played SNES R-Type in passing as I was an Amiga owner back then, and
used to the arcade-perfect conversion of R-Type 2, but I remembered the SNES
game suffering a lot of slowdown.

I'll probably buy it all the same when it comes out in the UK because I really
want an R-Type game to play on the move, but for true arcade greatness, I'll be
sticking to MAME (R-Type) and Winfellow (Amiga R-Type II).

Is that the R-Type that also appeared on the first Gameboy? I had
that one back in the days (actually I still have it) and it's GRATE.
VERY VERY hard though, and because it doesn't have a save
or password system I never finished it. Put a lot of hours in it
though..

I think it was. I didn't have an original Gameboy and I can only remember the
screenshots, but they looked like the graphics from the arcade version. The
Amiga version was horrendously bad with very poor collision-detection and awful
graphics, but the arcade and Spectrum versions were great! The sequel, R-Type II
more than made up for it though.

You might want to try and get a copy of R-Type DX for the GBC.  It's pretty
good.

I think I might. Hopefully there'll be a second-hand copy floating around
Manchester tomorrow.
