do you have to turn the player off each time you change a game or can
you switch cartridges with it still on?

You would have to power-cycle the machine to "reset" it anyway...
besides, it's usually a good idea to power-off when fooling with a
computer system's data bus.

Don't worry though, you don't have to take the battery out or anything.
Nintendo might force use to purchase a headphone adapter with the SP, but at
least they don't go to Nokia's extremes.
