Hi, I purchased SMA4, and while playing the game, I came across some dumb
new addition in the game.  When I beat some levels, then lose all my lives
and continue, the game starts me off at the same level I was just trying to
beat (not at the last castle I beat)!!!  wtf?!  To make things even worse,
all of the mushroom houses and other special squares reappear!  I keep all
of my previous inventory and then go back and get more!!  Plus I can also go
to the levels to play for more 1ups.  This is really dumb and makes the game
totally not fun.

What I don't understand is that nobody else seems to be commenting on this
in their reviews on amazon.com, or even in the official reviews at
gamespot.com and other game sites.  They do comment on other differences,
such as the ability to save after you beat a castle, new graphics, etc.  Did
I receive some oddball version of this game or something?!  This is just too
big a deal for nobody to even mention as this is just as bad as using save
states to play the game.

Anybody else notice this?

You say "just as bad", but why should it be a bad thing? Think about all
the commuters going to work and playing GBAs on the train. Are they
going to want long distances between save points? Probably not.

I don't see it as a bad thing. I've not played the GBA version, but I
know that on the NES/SNES it is a huge game (if you attempt to complete
all the levels) so I think additional save points make little
difference. Even in the original games, it was so easy to build up a
massive stock of lives/items that I can't see how the points you've
mentioned can make it any easier.

Best regards,
Pete

In the original NES game, you could't save at all - if you were wanting to
beat the whole game, you were going to be there for one looooong sitting.
Definitely a bit more challenging. :)

I have absolutely no problem with saving the state every now and then (such
as after beating one of the castle slots).  I have a problem with the
following scenario:

I am playing level 3-3 (I have no clue what level that actually is).  I lose
my last life in 3-3, but I select "Continue."  In the original game, I would
start I believe at the beginning of the level or at the last castle
conquered.  However in SMA4, I start right back at level 3-3!  If we are
concerned with taking too much time to play through the game, why not just
give infinite lives as that is what this pretty much amounts to anyways.  I
can lose all of my lives, but it doesn't matter because I will just start at
the same place I lost the last life.

Do you really think that is a good thing?

I wouldn't necessarily herald it as being a good thing, but I just
wouldn't say it's a bad thing.

I suppose it depends on how you view the game in general. If you want it
to provide entertainment for a certain period of time, then it does that
(even though it's effectively giving you infinite lives as you point
out). If, however, you are after a challenge, then it's probably not so
good.

Different strokes for different folks!

:o)

See, I think the days of limited lives are over so that essentially they
make it unlimited lives is perfectly alright with me. I don't quite remember
how they handled that in the original though...most of the time I was
playing the original with Game Genie giving me infinite lives.

What they should do, in my opinion, (and they likeley HAVE done), is to
unlock stuff only if you beat it without continueing... either form of it...

hmmmm - doesn't seem to happen in my european version!? only after
completing the game do all of the bonus stages stay visible after visiting
them. They never reappeared until i completed the game.

is yours a US version? or did you buy is 2nd hand [ie. completed already]?

Yes, its the US version.  I bought it at a Game Stop, and it was new, not
used.  None of the save slots were in use initially.

This is really odd.  I am really wondering why my game works differently
than yours.

it is interesting...

seeing it's a US version so i know that it has extra features that the
european version doesn't seem to posses [e-reader compatability - grrr] - so
maybe there is a conflict exsisting in the programming there.

it could just be a faulty cart, but if it is - it's certainly a rare one -
so i would take good care of it if i were you!

I liked the other Mario games, but it gets old putting the game to sleep
mode when finishing a level. I didn't like it either. I put the game down.
Playing Crash Bandicoot N-tranced now. Will sell SMA4 soon.
