I'm having a lot of trouble defeating Trunkle.  I can only get 2pt hits on
him with the occasional 4 lucky shot.  I have gotten him down to the point
where he splits into four peices, and have hit the one with the orange in
his mouth a few times, but he keeps reforming and then gaining a lot of
points back by breathing in repeatedly.  I have played him for an hour
trying to beat him many times.  There must be a better way.  any hints?

I haven't got that far myself, but this is what my walkthrough says:

*******************************************************************************
Following the trend of really big bosses, Trunkle doesn't disappoint.
Hit his BODY with Hammer attacks. He will attack by sucking in Gritty
Goombas, Mushrooms and Poison Mushrooms. Make sure not to get hit by
the Goombas or Green Shrooms. After enough damage, he'll split in four
and the four little trunkles will dance around. You must attack the
right one, which, before dancing around will show itself by opening
its mouth. If you attack the right one and then pound the others down,
you'll win the fight. The little ones have two attacks; rolling into a
ball and rushing you, in which you must dodge by jumping, and by
moving through the ground at you where you must hammer-whack to
defend. Pretty easy boss. Can be confusing.

EXP: 500. COINS: 188. Items: 1-Up Mushrooms, Super Nuts.

I have read this Faq but it doesn't really help.  My problem is the boss
reforms and its like starting all over again.

I got to that bit in the game and when he split I lust killed all the
other three leaving the one with the orange thing in his mouth and
attacked him with Mario's Spin Bros attack thing.
The guy didn't even have time to reform.

I missed the spin attack somewhere along the road.  I'll have to go back and
pick it up.   Thanks
