I know its hard to gauge how much they are gonna be used, but is there
a rough guideline as to when I should expect to have to replace
the battery?  1 year? 2?

thx - Craig

Approximately 3 years according to Nintendo if I remember correctly.

When it won't hold charge.  When you get about couple hours of game time
between charges, I'd consider getting a new one.  otherwise just ignore
the battery and enjoy the SP.  They are designed to last 500 recharge
cycles before it starts to lose charges.  Assuming you play full time
with light on, you'd be lucky to start losing charge before the first
year's up.
