John Salerno - 22 Sep 2003 20:49 GMT ok, i'm having a hell of a time trying to pick between platinum and onyx...mainly because i can't find anyone who has a black one to show me...i'd like to see what it *really* looks like (not the fancy nintendo pictures), so i was hoping some of you could post some pictures of your black SPs, or direct me to a site that shows various shots of it...
the guy in software etc today said that it was sort of glossy, like the flame is glossy...it doesn't appear to be that way in the pictures i've seen, but if it is i don't think i'd like that...i'd like it to be a dull, nonreflective black....
thanks!

I've tried taking a few shots with my webcam - obviously the quality isn't up to much, but I hope it helps!

John Salerno - 22 Sep 2003 23:17 GMT i really appreciate it...i wish i wouldn't worry so much about this! i think i'm going to get a black one tomorrow....i just hope it isn't 'shiny' like the red...that was hard to tell from your pictures, but it still really looks cool....
another weird thing about the platinum is that the little pads in the top corners seem to be too dark for the silver of the GBA itself, it looks weird in some pictures, but in others you can't tell....

Just go into a shop and ask to look at one.
John Salerno - 23 Sep 2003 19:18 GMT > Just go into a shop and ask to look at one. no luck, they won't open a new one and they don't have any colors on display except silver...
Eric - 23 Sep 2003 23:11 GMT If you can't decide which color, then default to black. I really don't think you can go wrong with black. When I purchased mine, I took a couple minutes to decide if I wanted platinum or black. I decided on black and was happy with my decision.
The appearance of the black is a 'flat black', however if you look at it really closely you can make out specks. The specks improve the overall appearance.
Black is the most conservative of all the colors. So, if you are older and plan on using it in public, people will just think you are using a text pager. LOL. (I have yet to figure out exactly why it is considered 'acceptable' for adults to play the little games on cell phones in public, but silly to play a gameboy which has better games?)
The platinum ones, from what I read, chip the paint easily and reveal the color of the plastic underneath the paint (black). This makes the black one, obviously, able to hide the eventual scratches and dings.
Also, I read, (and haven't been able to verify for sure) that the black ones have a better LCD from a different manufacture than the others. I'm pretty skeptical on this though.
Eric - 23 Sep 2003 23:16 GMT Another point to add:
Another point to consider is that the black ones don't glare and reflect light like the platinum. It is a non-reflective black, as you wondered. I've also read that the platinum one does reflect sunlight, so sometimes outdoors it has a tendency to reflect sunlight into your eyes. I've used mine (black) in the sun laying on the beach, no problems.

John Salerno - 23 Sep 2003 23:58 GMT thank you *very* much for all those comments....i actually did buy the black one today for pretty much all of those reasons, and i love it....i can't believe how great the screen looks and i have a feeling that all black somehow makes the screen stand out better... :)
and it's funny, when i look around my apartment, i realize that almost everything i own is black...laptop, printer, tv, headphones, clock, etc. etc., so this fit in perfectly....(indigo GC though!)

Yep, I really like it as well. I followed Gameboys off and on, but put off purchasing one specifically because of the lighting (lack of). Having to have accessories didn't seem very "mobile" to me. When the SP was announced, I knew this time I'd finally get one.
Have fun! -Eric
John Salerno - 25 Sep 2003 02:58 GMT so the thing about the light is normal too?
> I read your other questions and everything is normal. Like someone else > said, just enjoy it. :-) [quoted text clipped - 6 lines] > Have fun! > -Eric Eric - 27 Sep 2003 21:43 GMT I had to go re-read that post to see what your question was.
I'm assuming that you are asking if you look at the screen from an angle of right to left, you notice the light makes a "trapezoid" type effect at a 45 degree angle?
If so, then yes that's normal.
There is only one light bar in the GBAsp and it is located at the bottom of the LCD screen.
When I get the time, I am going to take my GBAsp apart to the smallest practical level. Mainly for general curiosity, but I also want to find the easiest technique for getting at the LCD panel itself. I plan on taking digital photographs at each stage and posting a procedure as this could be helpful to many who would like to clean the dust off their LCD's.
I have a formal background in electronics. I wouldn't recommend anyone breaking down the GBA without a mininum experience working with electronic devices. Not so much because of the electronic components, but because the plastic components (case, frame, etc) appear that they could easily be damaged. Also, you want to use a familiar technique to prevent dust from collecting on the LCD before re-assembly.
