I was playing Mario Cart the other day, and after having finished my latest
attempt at improving my rating and finding that I was unsuccessful, I turned
it off in disgust right when it says on the screen " Saving race results. Do
not turn off". The next time I started Mario Cart (you know the blue cloudy
sky screen when the checkered flag comes up right before the main title
screen) the sky was red instead of the normal blue!

What does this mean? Is there corrupted data on the cartridge memory? Is
the cartridge memory on it's way out? Cartridge battery?

I've tried pulling the cartridge out and re-inserting. Same. The game
still plays fine, and I have no problems saving subsequent  race results.

Anyone else have this happen?

What determines your ranking in GP mode besides time? Does the number of
coins collected have a say in what ranking you are awarded? Anything else?

Thanks....

Darn tootin' the coins count. The more coins, the higher it drives your
final rating. You can't get the highest rating on each track without a
certain number of coins in your pocket.
