OK, I have been playing this game bit by bit for god knows
how long. I am looking at walkthroughs to see how far I've
progressed, but I play for 2-3 hours a week, so my memory
of location names and such is quite bad.

I can definitely say that I've revealed about 75% of the
territory, and I just defeated Hugh in battle. I now have
Roc's Wing (can jump really high), but I still can't push
those wooden boxes.

I read a couple of the FAQs, and it says that I was supposed
to get the Heavy Ring (which should let me move those boxes)
after defeating the 5th boss, and I should be able to
cleanse poisoned water after defeating the 6th boss.

Well, I look in the FAQ to see who the 5th and 6th bosses
are, and they are the Twin Dragons (Underground Gallery),
and Death (Underground Warehouse). The thing is, I don't
remember ever fighting these guys! Now, considering I KNOW
I faced off against Camilla and Hugh (according to the FAQ
I'm reading, the 7th and 8th bosses), I am confused.

I was under the impression that, despite some freedom to
explore, the game progresses in linear fashion. Is it
possible that I have somehow skipped the 5th and 6th
bosses? You could suggest that I just forgot fighting
against them, but that doesn't explain why I can't cleanse
poison water, or push wooden boxes.

Anyway, I did find a nice map on gamefaqs, so I will look
into it, but I thought I'd ask the question in the
meantime.

Thanks,
Ken

p.s. Have any of you finished the game without using a
map or walkthrough?

It's possible to not have fought the 5th and 6th bosses, because they're
really not 'in order' like that. The FAQ's try and put them in the best
possible order for the level that you should be at when you reach them. If
you defeated both Camilla and Hugh, the bosses you missed will be a walk in
the park. You may have missed the entrance to the underground, I'd advice
looking at a castle map online - you'll instantly be able to see what area
it is that you've overlooked.

As for your PS, I beat it on every mode, only looking at an FAQ the first
time around to see what enemies dropped what cards. I had uncovered about
95% of the map, and only had maybe 6 cards. Meh.

Thanks! I realized I had missed an entraceway that was once
blocked by a statue. I sat down and put some time in, and
easily took care of the 5th and 6th bosses. I went back to
Hugh (I realized that I had defeated him before, but wasn't
able to make it to a save room without dying), and now I'm
at the point where I've attempted to beat Dracula, and have
made it to the second last room in the Battle Arena.

Yes unfortunately I did miss it. What I don't understand is
why they don't mark these barriers in the in-game map as
you come across them. You see a passage from one room to
another unexplored area, but you don't remember why.

I don't really see how trying to remember where you saw all
those wooden crates or statues really adds any value to the
game. I like how Metroid Fusion marked off blocked areas
with the colour coded door in the in-game map. Once you got
access to (for example) red doors, you knew exactly where
you had to go. If they had put a grey, brown, and green
dots on the map (for stone blocks, wooden crates, and
statues), I would've been happier.

I am tempted to do the same. I think I have found around 10
cards on my own, and the thought of wandering around
killing people on the off chance they drop a card is not
making me happy.

Anyway, thanks for your help and encouragement. I may
actually finally be able to play Harmony of Dissonance in
the near future :P
