Basically Handhelds are not region locked this includes the PSP as well as the much loved DS.
US titles can freely be played on the European DS as can Japanese titles. This is because they carry thier own screen and hence do not suffer from PAL/NSTC signal limitations as thier bigger consoles cousins.
Therefore, when in the US you can buy and play US titles on your UK DS.
The only real difference with US on UK cartridges this the languages, both oviously support English but the US will have fewer of the European languages usually, maybe Spanish.
This also applied to GBA cartridges if you want to play any of these on your DS.

Your DS has a GBA slot for Game Boy Advanced games - you can choose whether
you can to play the game on the upper or lower screen.

And that's something I've never really understood about the US
versions. More people speak Spanish than English in North America and
there's a few places in Canada which are French enclaves. So I've
never really understood why the "non-Japanese" versions are not the
same, unless the gaming companies try to rush the English version out
and then fix the bugs in the International multi-language edition?
