that makes me even more excited than i was, i need to pre order one now!
Guest - 20 Sep 2006 06:19 GMT
There used to be a time when I saw the word Nintendo on a box, I would get
chills expecting the real deal and getting it.  Now when I see it, part of
me says it would be nice to come back to Nintendo and the other knows what;s
in that Wii and the limits of it's power so I cannot go back.  If the Wii
had specs to compete, I WOULD go back.

Do the specs matter if you are getting enjoyable games?

Yes.  They matter(as they have in the SNES days) because it let's you know
the potential of the system.  You know from the specs what it can and cannot
do.

tetris had crap, basic graphics, but is quite possibly the most played

would putting it in high res and 3D with detailed textures make it

The potential of a system is not just counted by the amount of polygons on
screen.

I like those British mystery/detective shows that come on PBS here.  It
stars the guy who was in the latest Bond films.  I think we also got a show
about a chef which was OK.  All other are BORING.  I guess it is boring in
the same way that NFL Europe is BORING.  Old European drab colors and an
over all feeling of boring foreign imports.

Not forgetting All in the Family - a sanitised (but still considered
risky) version of the UK sitcom Till Death do us part. Archie Bunker/Alf
Garnett is our very own Guest.

I'd point out the superb Arrested Development, but it got cancelled
because Americans wouldn't watch anything that required any amount of
attention.

To be fair, the Americans have sorted that out somewhat - by putting advert
breaks in every 5 mins.

Skipai Otter - 25 Sep 2006 06:16 GMT

Nah, they put in advert breaks every five minutes as most companies think
the average American can't hold a attention span for more than five minutes
which is really arrogant thinking on their part to be honest.

Mind you, money sells over there, I'm surprised it hasn't dropped to having
a break every four or three minutes yet.  Could get like that though,
eventually.  :)

Only problem is, the UK is getting to the point of having advert breaks
every five minutes.  Sky's the worse culprit for that one.  :p

The number of commercial breaks is getting ridiculous.

I've given up on most TV now over here.  Too many repeats of programmes I am
not interested in.  Too much rubbish like Big Brother and X-Factor or
American Idol or *insert some other rubbish reality show here* crap.

Always seems that the more channels you get, the worse it goes to be honest.
Now, if I could make it illegal to ban all quiz channels in the UK, I be
even more happy.  They seem to be popping up more than shopping channels
lately...

There are at least 23,390,012 US sitcoms funnier than Little Britain.
And US sitcoms by and large are about as funny as death.

Did anyone ever see the US version of Coupling? Same characters, a fair
bit of the same script, different actors, US-ified. Took the best
British comedy of the last 20 years and made it about as funny as their
remake of the Wicker Man.

You should see what they have done to 'Cracker' (known as Fitz in the
USA) and 'The Office'.

It made me want to cry. Not with laughter either.

The Canadians seem to get the UK drama/comedy thing OK, but not the
yanks. No idea why that should be.

I'd advise against that.

Firstly, he's likely to break something - he's not very bright, and
obviously doesn't know how to configure a newsreader properly.  And I really
don't want to miss out on his hilarious xenophobia and utterly impressive
knowledge of how hardware affects gaming strategy.

Secondly, a lot of newsreaders discard the text below the sig-sep, and as
such a lot of people can't actually see what he's posting, and I suspect
they'll be quite annoyed when they find that all of a sudden their newgroups
have been polluted by his dementia.

Our comedies must be impressive as you people seem to have heard about all
of our shows.  Now how many shows of yours can we name?  When it comes to

No, we don't get your shows because we don't want then or the people in
charge of buying them feel that we can't relate.  Meanwhile, you and the
rest of the world feel that you MUST have our things.  Like football.  You
like your type of football(we call it soccer) and the rest of the world does
not see their football as ours, but the world feels compelled to watch our
Super Bowl.  When I was in Canada, I could not help but notice how their
country is nothing but a poor clone of ours(some things I feel are better
though) and they do not have their own identity.  They are supposed to be
under your crown, yet they hardly deal with you as if they were, culturally.

compelled? i don't know what the ratings are for you game of poof's
rugby when it gets shown over here, but i bet they aren't half as much

NFL has a following over here, yes, but that following is absolutely
tiny. to say we're all "compelled" to watch the superbowl shows how

I know this dude.  You need to read what the commonwealth requires of it's

I can assure you that you are wrong.  If it were like that, it would be all

special event(like we know when that is...) or is put on the obscure ESPN2.

In the UK only one channel shows NFL. It is Channel 5, the country's
least watched TV channel, and they air it between 2am and 5am on a
weekday. About 500 people watch it. NFL is NOT big over here. It's not
even small. About three people understand it, whereas despite not being
the majority dominant sport in the US, 'soccer' is become more
widespread and popular, which is why big American sites like IGN and
Gamespot have their FIFA and Winning Eleven reviews plastered on the
front page, whereas a lot of UK media doesn't even bother reviewing
Madden, because about ten people buy it and it's not worth their while.
Where on earth have you got this idea from that *anyone* outside the US
watches NFL?

In the US MLS top division alone there are 12 matches a week each with
an average attendance of around 18,000. That's 216,000 a week attending
in the stadia, not including those who watch the game on TV. The games
shown on ESPN2 get an audience of around 350,000, whereas the big cup
ties show on ABC get between 800,000 and 1.4 million viewers. These
figures do not take international matches or foreign leagues into
account.

Oh.  Well your country is no comparision to the US.  Our channels are in
local metro areas, not national.  Your country is so small so I guess it's
that way.

About 500 people watch it. NFL is NOT big over here.

See dude, I never said the NFL as a whole, I said the Super Bowl!  That is a
game that people in this country watch even if they never saw a regular
season game.  I never understood that, but that is the way it is.

It's not

I live here.  No one except foreieners like it or even know what it is
about.  You guys love it because it is all that you have.  We hate it
because it is boring and we have all of our others sports.  We also have
such a large country with at least 200 cities of large size in order to have
many teams.  Even Canada does not have that.  That is why their CFL has only
8 teams and it is hard for them to find other places to put teams in because
of their lack of many large cities.

which is why big American sites like IGN and
> Gamespot have their FIFA and Winning Eleven reviews plastered on the front

Uh, no.  They are new games.  Those games are not exactly large sellers here
you know.  The next-gen soccer games do look nice, but the game is boring.
Worse scoring than hockey.

NFL games typically hold around 80,000 people and usually sell out.  Let's
not get into this debate about MLS of NFL.  In your country you are right
and in mine I am right.  However, no one cares about what goes on in your
country while the entire world cares about what goes on here.

They are just desperate to see titties. They are censored everywhere
else (you can see surgeons cutting breasts open, blood oozing out,
stuffing the breast with silicone implants, but the nipple is ALWAYS
blurred out), so your best chance of catching a real tit on TV in the
US is during Super Bowl.

Our comedies must be impressive as you people seem to have heard about

That's because US TV censors or restricts most of what's available. Ever
seen a 9/11 joke on TV over there? - they're plentiful here. Did you
ever notice that a chunk of your movies are made by foreigners? Didn't
think so? Hollywood hardly has any activity in it anymore. Surprised you

Lol. I'm married to a Welsh girl - the only assertion she makes about her
nationality is that she's grateful she wasn't born an American. And having

You British are something else.  Acting like you are do-gooders when you
have Iraq before the US ever did!  You won't let Gibraltar go, you are
responsible for US slavery(as British and not as Americans) and you denied

No, we have just been brainwashed into thinking that it is fancy English.
They never tell us to really listen to it.  When we really listen to it, we
hear hints of Latin and German spoken in those ways.

I take umbrage at that, despite being British myself.
Some of the best comedies in the last few years have been from over the
pond.
ie
My Name is Earl
The War at Home
Scrubs
Malcolm in the Middle
not to mention Friends!
Then there are the great animated series:
The Simpsons
Futurama
Family Guy
American Dad
King of the Hill
and South Park!

What surprises me is how popular The Office became.
It's what we call 'cringe making' comedy, where a situation has been
deliberately set up to be really embarassingly awkward for someone.
Do you Yanks understand 'Extras' (by Ricky Gervais), and I don't just mean
the episodes with US actors in it.
Do you understand the situations with British-known-only actors in it?

Oh come on, the Simpson's should've stopped about 10 seasons ago, it's
really long in the tooth, lame, etc now...  But it brings in the cash so I
can't see it stopping.  I've stopped watching it though, not as funny as it

since it was "de-cancelled"

>American Dad

pale imitation of family guy tbh. christ, the other week both shows
even had a similar setup for gods sake. just isn't funny enough.

>King of the Hill

had about a season until everyone realised it was a bit pants and
lacked humour.

>and South Park!

died a death arounf series 7, then got desperate and resorted to shock
tactics rather than humour.

>What surprises me is how popular The Office became.

i doubt it. the ameican office went of on its own way, the bristish
version is still something special, and always will be. the best ever
christmas special too.

>Do you understand the situations with British-known-only actors in it?

You are not supposed to have to think about a 'joke' before finding out if
it's funny or not.  I thought about those and they are not funny no matter
how you slice it.

He never said you had to think about it - just that you need a bit more
brain power. If you had any wits yourself, you'd understand the
distinction without me having to draw you a picture.

Actually, the UK troops in Iraq managed to handle situations that went
out of hand for the US troops. The UK lads were trained to handle
difficult situations without escalating them. US troops have a
reputation of being trigger happy and having a "shoot first - at least
twice - ask questions later, maybe" mentality.

My impression is that the US military is still sort of oriented towards
full scale balls-to-the-wall cold war style conflict (despite recent
attempts to shift their focus a bit), whereas Britain has a lot of
experience with low-intensity "delicacy required" conflict due to
Northern Ireland, and their military culture is well adapted to it.

i don;t think the term "peace keeping force" could ever be applied to
the US military.

yes britain has been bad in the past, but we've learned from that.
maybe it's time for the US miliatry and government to learn from their
own mistakes, instead of constantly repeating them.

Er, well, obviously.

But something the size of the US military is a slow and clumsy thing to
change, even with the best intentions and guidance from the top -- and
right now there are a bunch of delusional adolescents in charge.
It's gonna be a loooong process...
