I found a nice red colored game boy at a thrift store for $2. It is
missing the battery cover, though. Any ideas, tips, or tricks on making
a substitute battery cover?

If it is the original Gameboy, eBay has some. You will bay more for the
cover than the GBA, but it is worth it to keep the batteries in there....
