Nintendo beyond the Revolution: games fill entire room ?

In the future, what do you think video games will be like?

Shigeru Miyamoto: "It's convenient to make games that are played on
TVs. But I always wanted to have a custom-sized screen that wasn't the
typical four-cornered cathode-ray-tube TV. I've always thought that
games would eventually break free of the confines of a TV screen to
fill an entire room. But I would rather not say anything more about
that."

Yeah you're right J
I don't know jackshit about anything.
I have only been gaming since pong and I own almost every gaming console
that has ever existed.
Nintendo does nothing but milk, milk, milk the same damn characters over and
over and over and over.....................etc and so on.
Yeah no doubt other companies do this as well but no where near the level
that Nintendo has. 20+ years of milking the same damn games! They have their
heads in their collective a.sholes and they have become nothing but an also
ran (niche company) in the industry they once saved from extinction.

The thing is, if a franchise works and sells, it will be released
again and again..
I would not wonder, if you see Halo on the Xbox for another 10 years.
If peaople like the game, they will give you what you want.
Nintendo is not anymore the giant who controlls things. You complain
is dull.

That's not an answer it's an excuse, on your part.
Nintendo is living on past success of games created on their 1st system.
They have barely created anything new since.
They now have become a niche company and their console userbase is dimishing
each passing year.
Sony and MS have left them in the dust and most developers are leaving them
as well.

Well, it might be like that.
But, we will remember, who thinks turn out years to come on Xbox,
Playstation. On the Playstation it is already happening. Same games,
same story. Not that i don;t even like it, but to tell, that Nintendo
lives from its past, oh well...
It don't take side for any company, but i just still loves Zelda
games. Even if its all the time the same story. Who cares...

laziejim@gmail.com - 04 Nov 2005 21:07 GMT
Nintendo is not living on past success, it is living on current proof
that old models still work. Take for example this years E3
show...clearly E3 is a place where you can tell where the hype of
gamers lay. 2 of the 3 next gen consoles were there, one was actually
playable. How long was the line to PLAY xbox 360...maybe 10 min. then
there was the PS3 demo, about an hour and half to two hour wait. The
longest line at E3 this year was to play Zelda. two and half to three
hour wait. Now, I'm not sure how that can be considered living off a
past success, because CLEARLY, it is what people want.

Nintendo has become a company that creates hardware to better its
current games. When you have a line up like, Zelda, Mario, Metroid,
Donkey Kong, Kirby, Pokemon(personally I hate that game, but it sells),
Star fox, etc. to work with, why bother creating ANOTHER? Why not give
gamers what most are looking for, new ways to have the heros, they've
fallen in love with, progress through a game. This is done through
upgrades to hardware (i.e. Revolution) and new stories.

ohh but I suppose the other two companies are doing new things...I
forgot, what great games did Microsoft create for the xbox...ohh yeah
they ride on Halo and Project Gothem Racing (which isn't even as good
as Grand Turismo)...Then there is that game that Sony created for
PS2...hmm...don't seem to recall them ever making any.

ohh but they have better 3rd party support...well guess what, that just
changed with the Revolution. currently Rev. has the longest list of new
games from 3rd parties. Even Squaresoft said they are not allowing PS
to have sole rights to the new Final Fantasy's....and I can't imagine
why that would happen...perhaps its was because Nintendo decided to
step AWAY from what EVERYONE else is doing and do something new.

I personally agree that Nintendo is doing well and not just relying on past
success.  I think its a shame that unfortunately Nintendo doesn't have the
financial muscle to compete with the likes of Microsoft or Sony.  No matter
what it does right, it has to bow out of the console market after the next
console like Sega did, unless some miracle happens or unless what it
releases is so vastly superior to its competititors that people will drop
their existing console and buy Nintendo.

They did something amazing with the Nintendo DS in that they captured the
female audience, but even now they are losing ground to the more powerful
PSP machine.

As most software houses now write games that can be ported to all platforms,
Nintendo will lose out to competition that can afford more mass market sales
as their version of the game will be that much cheaper through sheer volume.

Furthermore, Microsoft is currently leading the way with online gaming.
There isn't a lot Nintendo can do.  Microsoft can afford to make huge losses
to gain market share.  Sony can afford to stoop to Microsoft's level.

Its a shame.  A big shame, but its the way it is.

OK, name a few games that people are excited about that hasn't already
had a release on a previous Nintendo system?  Nintendogs springs to mind
of late as being something new, but that's about it.  People were
excited about Ocarina of Time because of the Zelda games they'd played
before.  The same could be said about Wind Waker, but it that had been
released as a game without the Zelda name behind it I can't imagine it
would have done nearly so well.  That's not to say it was a bad game, I
enjoyed it (except for sailing around to find the bloody triforce), but
Nintendo rely very heavily on what's been popular previously.

Dreamcast & Playstation brought some new things to bear but that's
besides the point, I was saying that Nintendo relies very much on past
successes, and I stand by that.  I'm not saying nobody else does, in
fact even a quick glance at any release schedule reveals things to be
made up of 90% sequels and rehashes.

Like i said, thats pretty much on every console the case.
Onces a concept works, it will be reworked and comes out as following
parts.
I really don't see their a differences between consoles at all.
That we Mario in 20+ games is just, that Nintendo is an old school
console maker.
Sega, for that part, disappeared from the console market.
Personally i don't think it is that bad at all. Because people love it
and they buying it.

What do they create new?
Practically nothing.
They just keep on rehashes the same characters is my point.
At least you get variety (lots and lots of variety in all genres) on the
other systems.
Seriously, besides RE4 this past year, WTF has come out on the Cube worth
playing?
1, 2, 3 titles?
Regardless of the money Nintendo makes they are officially a niche only
company and the userbase is shrinking with each new console.
Joerg Jaeger - 06 Nov 2005 16:48 GMT
I don't get the point, why you complaining about that.
Other consoles have the same phenomena.
Xbox has is own cashcow Halo, where we see follow-ups.
On the Playstation you have Final Fantasy with follow-ups.
And yes, on the Gamecube you get alot different Mario titles.
I just totally disagree with your statement.
Its not just Nintendo who milks a franchise. Others do the same. But
yes, we seen so far no Halo Baseball. But how knows..

Besides, people complaint about Nintendo since the Playstation came
along and stated that the company may go out of business.
I just think, there is alot of people who don't like Nintendo at all.
But that's just fine.

Good point.  But if you go to that extreme, what's so special about any of
the other consoles?

Most of the games that can be seen as innovative are third party.

Pet simulators have been around for years in japan. There was a title on
the PSX called Nyan Nyan, or something like it. It had cats as well as
dogs... but it's the same exact thing as Nintendogs. So, in a way, they
are relying on past success with that title. It just took Nintendo to
have the balls to release it in the states.

Yep, I can't see where people think this title is SO amazing, unique, etc..
Those things have been around for some time now. I remember my sister having
one for the PC YEARS ago.
Joerg Jaeger - 07 Nov 2005 05:06 GMT
This discussion is so funny. I have to say, wooh..
Why you guys just don't say, what you are really thinking. Which is,
that Nintendo is crap.
I mean, pinpointing that several games are cloned, evolutionist, or
what ever, is not really new. But its somehow new, because everybody
wants to bloody prove, that nintendo is copying and doing nothing new.
These arguments are so lame.
What everybody left behind, is, that Mario is Nintendos mascot.
Everybody identifies Mario with Nintendo. Without, who would want wo
play on a nintendo console.
Sega had it Sonic, without it would probably vanished much more
sooner.

The point is, so far, that people amazingly like that (crap). And i
think it is legitimated, because why change a good game concept if
people like the games.
If people like Halo 30, be happy. There is absolutely nothing wrong
with that.
We just let it to the history, who milks more franchise ideas. To be
honest, i think all three console makers rely on certain titles. For
Nintendo it is Mario, Zelda, Pokemon. Sony relies pretty much on Metal
Gear and Final Fantasy and the Xbox surly on Halo, Doom and whatever
is fame's on PC to be ported.

laziejim@gmail.com - 07 Nov 2005 18:42 GMT
The more I read about people who say, "Nintendo needs to create
something new...they just keep rehashing the same thing," the more I
begin these people have NEVER read a book in their lives. Nintendo has
always and probably, will always, continue to do what people want them
to do. Just like any other artist across any other medium of art. There
is a Reason that J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series has been such a
huge success, there is a reason Tom Clancy's 'Jack Ryan' (for those of
you not familiar it includes titles like Clear and Present Danger and
Patriot Games) series has so many novels included that were all very
successful, its no wonder Robert Jordan has written a million f.cking
Wheel of Time novels. Same goes for movies. What is the popular trend?
Make a sequel.

Now this isn't some new phenomenon...People like to be immersed in a
new world. We read books (well some of us), play video games, and watch
movies to be taken away from your daily life and immersed in a fantasy
world. Whether that world be one of professional athlete or one of a
hero trying to save the princess, they all accomplish the same goal:
Make you feel in control of someone or something you normally could not
normally do. Now that is no excuse to do the same thing over and over
again, however, basic human nature, for most people, is to want to know
more, or explore more of the world they are in. When someone becomes
immersed in a new world they want to know as much as they can about it
and meet as many of the characters as they can. Lo, it is not
surprising that J.R.R Tolken's Lord of the Rings saga has such praise.
He did a wonderful job of repeatedly giving the reader every ounce of
detail about Middle Earth. This is the same formula Nintendo has taken
with their games. You keep expanding this world people want to know
more about.

With regards to all the other games, featuring Nintendo characters
(Super Smash Bros., Mario Tennis, Kart, Golf, Baseball, Party etc.) it
is Nintendo putting a new spin on a developed genre. You can't argue
that EA has sports pretty well locked up. I mean yes there is NFL/NBA
etc. 2kWhatever, but does it even matter? A sports game is going to run
like a sports game. To make a sports game today, you need to a have a)
Season mode b) Real Players c) semi-accurate stats d) be as realistic
as possible. Well EA has that pretty locked up. How do you get around
this? Create sports games that pretty much break that mold as best as
possible. NBA Jam/NFL Blitz did this and was huge successes at the
time. Granted Mario sports games are rarely fantastic games, but they
are always nice little antic dotes to the norm, so they become worth
playing.

Dude, what's wrong with having your favorite characters back? Don't you
enjoy movie sequels? Don't you wait for your favorite band's next
album? One thing you guys are to thick to understand is that a new game
or a new comcept *can* have an old character to star on it!

"Oh, Nintendo only makes Mario games, while on my PS2 I have lots of
different games and sh.t". Okay, lesse... Mario GOLF, Mario TENNIS,
Mario KART, Mario BASEBALL, Mario PARTY, Mario SUNSHINE, Mario PAINT,
DR Mario, Mario PINBALL and... SUPER MARIO BROTHERS!!!

Wow, that's what, one game made over and over? Mario, mario, mario and
mario? If that's all you see, then I'm sorry. For me it's a hell of a
lot of fun different games. And look!!! They don't have to spend 70% on
the games budget to license some famous season movie franchise in order
to have a star on the game because... THEY HAVE THEIR OWN!!!!

Get it now?

It puzzles me, how people say always that nintendo fails or sucks.
(no, its just an statement in general).
Nintendo is by far the company what makes actually money. M$ does not
make money, it actually loses money by every console sold.
What M$ is doing, we know from the PC business. M$ (due its huge
funds) rolls over the market, not in gaining money, but market share
as their priority.
I am not sure, if i want to live and game in a M$ Computer & Gaming
world.
For one thing, if Nintendo succeeds with the new concept, it will be a
good addition to the gamingworld. If they fail, they might struggle,
but i don't think they will go out of business.

Besides, in the latest EGM it was stated that Nintendo sold Nintendogs
a 1.5Million copies worldwide. An amazing number.

Yes, CLEARLY it's what people want.  Also it's CLEARLY living off the
succes of previous Zelda games - people know those and like the idea of
more of the same.  There's nothing wrong with that, but it's blindingly
obvious that's what it is.

Let's just put that into perpective for a moment.

MS are continuing to make losses on the Xbox market at the moment and
they will not make any money on it before the end of the XBox's life.

Sony Computer Entertainment had a poor showing in profit margins for the
last financial year and issued shareholder profits warnings.

Nintendo had an extremely successful year, made way more money than
either of the other two, and exceeded their profit forecasts by a
considerable margin.

The "niche" company you speak of, seems to be doing rather well.

That is the only thing Nintendo zealots hang their hat on (Nintendo turns a
profit) and it's the lamest weakest of the bunch. The "ONLY" people that
care about profit is said company and their share holders, not gamers. Oh,

LOL - you're great :) You've gone so far beyond 'arse' that you're
easily the star of this thread. Thing is, I actually play the games I
buy and - looking along my shelf, I see around 40 cube games, about 8
xbox and about 8 ps2. The thing is, that the type of games released on
the cube are such that there's replay value there, rather than your
usual plod through the story, see the end cutscene, bin the game
situation you get with the other consoles. I don't feel I *have* to keep
buying GTA9 or GT7 or whatever the f.ck the latest fashion accessory is.
I just like having the occasional game of Frolf, or Monkey Ball.

You should really try and do something about this insecurity you have.

No insecurities here Jacko.
I have around 20 cube titles in my home and I have played and completed each
and everyone of them.
I have roughly 300 PS2 and XBox titles combined.
Please don't give me this bullshit about playing sequel </insert # here>
when you are playing the 100th+ installment of Mario (world/adventure,
racing, tennis, party, baseball etc and so on).
You get a ton of variety both in-house and from 3rd party on the  PS2 and
XBox that Nintendo fail to have. The only reason Nintendo makes money is
because they give you a bare bones system that doesn't cost squat to make.
I'd rather a top of a line system with a ton of support. Nintendo has since
been past by and you will see their userbase fall into the abyss in the next

It's remarkable that you manage to simultaneously type so much but say
so little.

My hat's off to you.

Nintendo saved the video game industry from extinction? You really don't
know anything. If it wasn't Nintendo, it woulda been someone else.

Never could get into any of the Mario games I tried....Sunshine, Luigi &
Mario Superstar Sagas, Luigi's Castle, Warioware, Wario World...couldn't
stand any of them - I just hate the characters. I avoided Nintendo systems
for years because of my dislike for all things Mario but... then I found
Zelda  - I will never hate one of those games. Can't stand Kirby either.

Now, Metroid - I only tried Metroid Prime and I liked it but it just didn't
keep my interest. Maybe I'll go back and finish it but maybe not.
