I've had Nintendogs (Labrador) for about two weeks now. All the breeds for
"Labrador" are open and now the "other breeds" are beginning to open.
(I.e., just got a German shepherd, which is an initial breed for
"Chihuahua".) I thought, at first, that the "other breeds" only unlock by
connecting up with someone else's DS and Nintendogs, but I guess everything
also eventually unlocks during single play as well. Thats cool. Neat
little "game" to showcase the DS, but have to say that its starting to be
more like a "chore". Gpt much of the unlockable items open now, as the dogs
have won championships in the frisbee catch and agility course. Haven't
done the "obedience" courses much though. Its bad enough having to feed,
groom, exercise, and train "virtual pets" at least once a day -- without
having to TALK to a damn handheld too! :-)
Just stumbled across today that, during the dog "meetings" on your walks,
that you can pull on the leash to have them interact with one another.
(Duh, I know.)
Q: Sometimes on walks, you go by "presents" that aren't listed on the maps
as icons. They are just sitting on the ground. Is there any point to them?
Tried touching them as the dogs walk by, but doesn't seem to do anything.
Also, has anyone ever accidently find some undocuments "secrets" in
Nintendogs?
I wonder if you let too much time go by before running Nintendogs, if you'll
find them belly-up and dead. Maybe I'll mess with the date to see what
happens. LOL, I remember with the Dreamcast allowing my Seaman to die a few
times -- floating at the top of the aquarium while getting bitched at by
Spock.
Cheers,
Eric

Duh, to answer my own question...
(Sorry, tired here.)
http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/ds/code/928837.html
"To find out if garbage or a present is approaching during one of your
walks, look at the top screen. There should be the little dog symbol on the
path that you drew. If that dog symbol stops and your dog is still walking,
this indicates that either garbage or a present is coming up on the floor.
If it is a present, tug your dog to a stop and your dog will notice it. It
will pick it up and bring it over to you. It is easier to do this when your
dog is running."

I found the same problem with Warioware.. enjoyable at first, but quite
a chore to complete the game getting all the roses (unless you like
repetitiveness)

You don't have to play it _every_ day. I play with my dogs about once a
week, when I feel like it, and they're still very happy to see me,
always hungry, but then I found that to be the case when I played it
about 8 hours apart.
From what I've read, your dogs *never* die, they can run away from home
though, but they do return.
I spend most of my time playing with my dogs (either in the field, or
just at home), if they get filthy I clean them, but not usually before
that point.
Playing once a week I spend 15mins satisfying their needs, and the rest
of the time playing, walking, and competing.

Supposedly this is not the case. There are several unique items in each version.

Get your dog to run towards the present; then they'll pick it up.

They say you start losing trainer points after a certain amount of time
of leaving them if you didn't put them in the dog hotel.

LOL, good one too. Yep, I know that feeling -- you have like six seconds
left on the frisbee toss competition and your (new, without much practice
yet) wants to stare at you for a few critical seconds before returning the
frisbee. :^)
Thanks for the pointers. Gamefaq's has several FAQ's now that folks have
drafted up, which pretty much cover everything.
Cheers!

I was thinking last night what could've been a neat addition to Nintendogs:
an online mode.
By online, I mean using standard TCP/IP over 802.11, so it could be taken
online easily with any AP (yours or open public.)
Thinking along the lines of the online mode being a completely different
"game" than the offline (Offline still including the "WLAN" trading).
Something like there only be a limited number of dogs that exist online.
You find a dog (maybe wait until they come to you), do the care and training
just like the offline mode, enter competitions, ect, but at some point your
dog will "run away" and "stray on the internet" until it finds a new owner.
Each dog includes info on it's past owners such as location, so you know all
the places they have been. No real point in it, other than just showcasing
the DS's technology and features, which is pretty much what Nintendogs is
anway. Virtual dogs that "live across the internet" would be kinda cool.
Cheers,
Eric
