Tiny Lund - 23 Jun 2005 23:29 GMT Very well done mod. Do the cars seem a bit more powerful? Perhaps it's the sound. The artwork cars, tracks ect are excellent.
ZZ - 23 Jun 2005 23:38 GMT Is this mod legal? Which sim does it mod? N2k3 or NSR? If it mods N2K3, it might be illegal.
I'm just asking in light of "the pits" fiasco that's going on.

jwilson54 - 24 Jun 2005 00:16 GMT It mods nr2003,is it illegal???I'm not a lawyer and nobody has went court yet so I would say it's really not decided.

Adam - 24 Jun 2005 18:53 GMT It's a stand-alone game that fully converts the NR2k3 engine, but insanely updates the graphics and physics. I mean INSANELY updates them. The game is the best looking racing game I've ever played, in fact. It's a 700mb download.

[quoted text clipped - 3 lines] >> >> I'm just asking in light of "the pits" fiasco that's going on. Darus - 24 Jun 2005 19:12 GMT How is it "converting" the NR2003 engine when it doesn't ask where it is? The 2005 mod automagically installed to my C: drive and my NR2003 install is on my F: drive. I don't want to shout TOO loud, but there has to be Papy code included.
Darus - 24 Jun 2005 20:20 GMT Does anyone else notice the REALLY blurry billboards, especially at Infineon? The ones on the left as you approach the hairpin are especially blurry.
I can see the menu updates, but a lot of the other stuff seems the same. For example, the Unocal ball at Lowe's is still there. And the Nextel billboards are all horrible, as if the image that was used was poorly sized.
What is the source of this update, i.e. who did all the work?
Adam - 25 Jun 2005 01:12 GMT Hence why I said it was a "stand-alone game".
i.e. you don't need NR2003 in any way, it was completely converted from NR2003 and made available for download as a standalone product. Obviously it is kinda hard to find, seeing as it is completely illegal in every way. Still quite a quality piece of software, 10 times better then NR2003 and 100 times better then Nascar SimRacing.

I don't want to shout TOO loud, but there > has to be Papy code included. Darus - 25 Jun 2005 02:57 GMT I'll stick with the superspeedway.net season updates. It's a bit more accurate and the billboards aren't blurry. This one has some good points, and I have to see about merging the two of them together.
Plowboy - 29 Jun 2005 14:23 GMT I cant believe it, so to you are saying: in your mind, you are in this game.... your running around the track at 200mph, and you call your crewchief, "what the hell does the sign in turn 4 say, goddam it?" This sux..
as it matters to you in the scheme of racing simulation? oh-kay fine.

Darus - 29 Jun 2005 14:53 GMT Taking into account the "rave" review above ("updates the graphics insanely"), I'd EXPECT the graphics to be BETTER than what I have now. Or at least the same. Why would I go backwards in gfx quality? And there is no one "out there" to contact for these issues. Plus the fact the MP is only good for Direct IP, with the dozen or so ppl. that have this mod. Plus, it's all stolen goods. Wow, what a deal!
On the other hand, I can use the SS.net packages, get the goods from them and get "tech support" if needed. Plus, his mods are all Sierra compatible.
Hmmmm...what to do?

I hear ya, about support, I guess.
But you paid $0.00 for a game that is simply a gfx &sound (some assumed track grip changes and a few other tweaks maybe?) that updates the tried and true 2k3 game (even as you see it) and I say woa.
Alas, they might have cut a corner, you pointed it out... that the picture they used for the billboard is out of focus or something? or is it not the right depiction of a possible bilboard in the turn or something?
But for what it is worth, I guess above and beyond all the hard work to the sim, somehow he/they owe it to you to take his 20megabit camera to the actual track, and take a snapsot of the sign, to make you happy?
Please read this in the light hearted but sarcastic tone I wrote it, I mean, for each his or her own, ya know. I dont wanna sound like you can not have an opinion, I merely want to make a point about the validity of the complaint to myself. hell I aint tried sonoma, so maybe I will agree with you, though knowing what 'matters to me' I doubt it...

Tom Harrington - 29 Jun 2005 23:01 GMT ...about those track grip changes....in NR2005 I can't get anywhere near a fast lap at the Kansas Speedway without losing the back end - using the easy, intermediate, or fast setups. Don't have that problem in NR2003.

Plowboy - 30 Jun 2005 14:10 GMT I hear you, but I didn't have that problem 'as much,' once I picked the fast setup. that host setup, wwow had me cussin at the machine enough to have family come in and do an intervention, lol.
One thing I cannot say is it was 'easier' to drive. not on my machine, I've always refused to turn on the aids. I only have run Kansas too, because I live there I guess, lol. right now I been working 20 hr days at 2 jobs where I have to 'be there' to monitor stuff (hence I can post to groups), so it will be a while before I get more practice. My buddy got to do the richard petty experience at Kansas, (fathers day present, and yeah Im jealous as hell) he remarked that after the get the hans on you and stuff, you cant even move your head... so he said that the sim (since you have very little periphial vision on screen) was IHHO, might be pretty accurate, sure wished he could "remove the cockpit" from the rearview mirror like we can in the sim, LOL!

Using <jasper> I'm able to complete 4-5 laps before I lose the rear end.
I turned down the AI a few notches from where I run them in NR2003. It's really dicey passing AI cars when your're so loose.
I've generally preferred road-course sims, so the increased difficulty of NR2005 may get me to appreciate ovals more.

But considering no one has stepped up to take credit for compiling all the "borrowed" work, I guess that is pretty unlikely.

jason moyer - 25 Jun 2005 04:50 GMT It's not hard to find, you can get it from raceservers.net. The guy who runs the site (mistakenly) thinks he's not doing anything illegal, which is hilarious.
Bob V - 25 Jun 2005 04:53 GMT : It's not hard to find, you can get it from raceservers.net. The guy : who runs the site (mistakenly) thinks he's not doing anything illegal, : which is hilarious. What's hilarious is I guess FIRST is/was so busy chasing McArthur, this quality piece of work has apparently slipped under the radar.
jason moyer - 25 Jun 2005 08:41 GMT > What's hilarious is I guess FIRST is/was so busy chasing McArthur, this > quality piece of work has apparently slipped under the radar. I'm not going to jump on the FIRST-bashing bandwagon, but I'll admit that I don't understand how they can be sending demeaning emails to Tim or to the Pits guys while a site like raceservers continues to offer up things that are blatantly illegal, and in other cases, highly unethical.

I'd bet this is the first cannonball fired at FIRST by one or some of the many enemies they're making for themselves. FIRST are digging their own graves. When you think of all the expertise out there in the sim community, you'd think they'd know better than to give them good reason to screw them over!
Darus - 25 Jun 2005 19:47 GMT Also, there is no multiplayer. Gee, I wonder why?
Bob V - 26 Jun 2005 00:21 GMT : Also, there is no multiplayer. Gee, I wonder why? Sure there is. Also check http://www.raceservers.net/Default.htm
Darus - 26 Jun 2005 13:05 GMT Via Sierra? I don't have a "Race Sierra" button in the upper right, like I do with either of my other installs? If you mean DIrect IP or LAN, then yes, there is MP.
jason moyer - 26 Jun 2005 00:24 GMT > When you think of all the expertise out there in the sim community I'm trying to think of all the expertise in the sim community and drawing a blank. I'm assuming all of the experts we have will start designing and releasing their own incredible sims?

Anyway, point is, there are a lot of people out there that can hurt an online gaming company. Why give them good reason to do so?
LuvrSmel - 24 Jun 2005 08:26 GMT I think this might be stupid week for me...but when I downloaded this mod I got the N2005 Nascar Craftsman Truck Series. Can't find any cars here. Is there an N2005 NASCAR that is not trucks??
> Very well done mod. Do the cars seem a bit more powerful? Perhaps it's the > sound. The artwork cars, tracks ect are excellent. PietD - 24 Jun 2005 09:13 GMT just click on the little arrows in the series screen at the bottom to change the series. There are Nextel and Busch series.
Plowboy - 24 Jun 2005 14:40 GMT Tiny,
What setup you try (and I should aks what track?) because I only did KS, and the setup was sooo loose mid & exit I thought I had a *real* driving curve, leaing curve problem, lol. loaded the FAST setup and I was ok, not setting any records or nothing.

I was using the default fast on Watkins and infineon. I just started to tinker with setups.

Anyone find it odd that the installer never asks for the location of the NR2003 install? Better get this one while it still exists!
jason moyer - 25 Jun 2005 08:45 GMT > Better get this one while it still exists! Eh, if you don't get it it's not a big loss. All they did was rename a nocd.exe and stuff a pile of other people's work into a giant zipfile. The models are the same as the default N2003 and PWF CTS models. I've heard rumors that the .exe is from the work BrianRing was doing, but I can't find any evidence of the physics having been changed. If they were, it's beyond subtle. The tracks and track-graphic updates can all be downloaded elsewhere, as well as the loading screens and carsets. You could put together a similar install from files available at nascarnet.com without breaking any laws, and you'd be downloading far less than 700 megs.
jwilson54 - 25 Jun 2005 14:08 GMT I'll say it again, until a case goes to court the legality of modding an open source(papryrus released the tools to the community over a year ago)code is still in question. However on the mod it seems to me the physics have changed,at least to me,and it's very fun racing the AI which nr2003 isn't.

NR2005 allows you to play NR2003 without purchasing the product. There is nothing remotely legal about that, regardless of how you feel about mods.
Trill Morgan - 25 Jun 2005 23:52 GMT > open source(papryrus released the tools to the community That may be YOUR definition of "open-source" but it is completely wrong.
The code ITSELF has to be made available PUBLICALLY so Joe Public is able to compile his very own EXE file (called "rolling your own" in some circles).
As far as I have been aware - Papy has NEVER released the code to Joe Public, so therefore N2K3 is "closed source".
The release of "tools" for Joe Public to play with are inconsequential. Do they re-write the code in any way? Not that I have seen...
Now someone prove me wrong!
rb21 - 25 Jun 2005 04:55 GMT I can't get it to work. Everythings ok until I click to go race and it keeps saying "Could not initialize the replay system" and then it says "Cancelling weekend" Any thoughts? Thanks
Plowboy - 27 Jun 2005 16:40 GMT LOL,
You have to get to the folder the game installed itself, run the 3dconfig utility.
