GPL - After all these years......

Wow, I'm still impressed and surprised at how well GPL has stood up after
all these years. I bought this game right when it came out, and had the
pleasure of racing with many of you who prolly still haunt this forum. I
still remember racing against Eagle Woman, and even a couple of the devs in
some great online races.

I'm wondering, from browsing the group, it seems that there is still some
support for GPL. Is there still an online program for GPL (damned if I can
remember the name of the program we used to find servers and races)? Is
there a central website still active for GPL where I could find updates and
maybe a discussion group to get up to speed on where GPL is now?

After finding my CD of GPL the other day, I've been reminded of what a
great sim this was, and the back of mind has been nagging at me to
reinstall this thing.

After all these years, what/where do I need to go to catch up on what is
certainly the greatest racing sim of all time?

iGOR was the name that Phil Flack gave it. To date, he won't let on what
it stands for :-)

It's very nice though. Does everything that VROC does and some extra
little bits.

*blinks* How very bizarre of him... unless, of course, he just thought
of the iGOR name without actually *knowing* what it might stand for! In
which case, I'm sure someone will come up with something - "interactive
GPL Online Racing" or the like.

Sounds very interesting. It's about time I did some online GPLing
again, and this might just be the spur for that. :)

I'd have gone with "improved", if it's supposed to be a newer version...

GPL "all-in-one" patch and add-on circuits at:

http://trackdb.d2g.com

And, like Kev said, '65 mod and new online tools due on Friday.

You have some catching up/driving to do! ;-)

What exactly is the 65 mod?  Has GPL been redone or is it just cars/tracks?

No tracks but basically there seem to be three elements.

Most crucially, there is a new version of GEM which changes the physics
parameters (grip, weight etc) to reproduce the 1965 F1 season.
Apparently they have tweaked the tyres to help reduce understeer &
improve feel. It should make the learning curve a little shallower I
guess.

There is also a complete carset for the '65 cars and some updated menu
graphics etc.

Then there is iGOR, which is apparently intended to entirely replace
VROC. In addition to the 'normal VROC features it will also allow for
restrictions to which set of physics you can join a server with,
presumably like the F1/F2/F3 options in VROC. iGOR should allow further
mods to gpl (different years etc) in the future & is intended to prevent
cheating the physics, although time will tell I guess.

It's been in development for several years now, and with luck should be
released in a few days.

Damn.  I was in the VROC beta testing group, and I had hoped to be included in
the testing for its replacement.  Guess not. :-(

That's pretty much spot on.

The mod will come in 3 download sizes.

Full (37Mb) , Midi(20ish) and Lite (8.7).
The full install has absolutely everything, the midi one leaves out the
hi-res cars and the lite version is just the physics and iGOR to get you
online. You can race just fine with '67 graphics.

All the missing components from the smaller downloads will be available
separately so 56k users can get the rest of the mod as and when they want.

ESSENTIAL items for your GPL install are the carsound patch (if you want
to use the provided mod car sounds) and the 1.2.0.2 (cpu/speed fix)
patch. Also, GEM has some neat movies of the cars in the selection
screen. You will need the free divx 5.11 codec to see them. You can turn
them off in the options though.

Still on course for release sometime on friday.

Yeah, I sure do. Just the thought of having to relearn "The Ring" is
daunting enough, not to mention the loads of new tracks out there now. One
cool thing I would hope to find nowadays is that hopefully the caliber of
drivers would be much better in the sense that people driving this sim now
online would be those who are commited to having fun, instead of those who
just picked up the game and haven't taken the time to learn how to drive.

I guess I'll see some online action soon, but I need time to relearn the
driving and tracks.

Thanks for the links from all of you!
